Nextcloud Pricing in Australia: The Real Cost Guide
Updated: October 7, 2026
Published: October 7, 2026
TL:DR
Nextcloud pricing gets confusing fast, because three very different things often get mixed up. There is the free, open source software itself. There is Nextcloud Enterprise pricing, which is a support subscription from the company that builds the software. And there is managed hosting, where a provider like Velocity Host runs the platform for you. Mixing these up is how a business ends up thinking Nextcloud is either free or expensive, when the honest answer sits in the middle and depends entirely on which of the three you are buying.
This guide separates the three, prices each one as accurately as public information allows, and compares the real total cost against Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and ownCloud. We flag anywhere a figure needs checking at the time you read this, because software prices move.

Is Nextcloud Free? What “Free” Actually Covers
Is Nextcloud free? The software is, yes. Nextcloud Server is open source under the AGPLv3 licence, and anyone can download it, install it on their own hardware or a VPS, and run it with no licence costs whatsoever. That is a genuine fact, and it is the reason Nextcloud shows up in so many “best free cloud storage” roundups.
But “the software is free” and “running it costs nothing” are two different claims, and conflating them is where most Nextcloud cost confusion starts. A free download still needs somewhere to run. You need a server or a VPS, a domain if you want a proper URL, an SSL certificate, storage, and backups. None of those are free, and none of them are optional for a business depending on the platform for client files. Then there is the biggest cost of all: time. Someone has to install the software, configure it, keep PHP and the database updated, apply security patches, watch disk space, and be available when something breaks at 7pm on a Friday. For a solo user running Nextcloud as a personal photo backup, that time cost is a hobby. For a business with five, ten or twenty staff depending on it to work, the time cost is a real, recurring business expense, even though no invoice ever arrives for it.
So is Nextcloud 100 percent free? Only if your own time has no value and you are confident in your own Linux administration. For most small and medium businesses, that is not actually free. It is a different kind of cost, paid in hours.
Nextcloud Storage Pricing: What You Actually Pay For
Nextcloud storage cost is not a single number, because Nextcloud does not sell storage the way Dropbox or Google Drive does. There is no official “$X per gigabyte” rate card from the Nextcloud project, because the project does not host your data at all. Nextcloud Files pricing, in other words, is really a question about where the files live, and it depends entirely on where you choose to run them.
On your own hardware, storage cost is whatever a hard drive or NAS costs you once, plus the electricity and the redundancy that you build in yourself. On a VPS, it’s whatever your hosting provider charges per gigabyte or per plan, which varies widely by provider and region. With a managed Nextcloud hosting provider, storage is usually bundled into a per-user allowance, with overage available by quote. See our own managed Nextcloud storage allowance further down this page.
This is worth knowing before you compare Nextcloud to a consumer storage service. Those services sell you storage. Nextcloud sells you a platform, with storage as one part of it alongside document editing, video calls, calendars, project boards and a wiki functionality. Comparing Nextcloud to a pure storage product on a dollar-per-gigabyte basis understates what you are actually getting.
Nextcloud Enterprise Pricing: What the Software Company Charges
Nextcloud Enterprise pricing is the support and licensing subscription sold directly by Nextcloud GmbH, the German company behind the software. It is important to understand what this does and does not include, because it catches a lot of businesses out: it covers software support and extra enterprise features, not hosting. You still need your own server or a hosting provider, in addition to the Enterprise subscription.
As published, Nextcloud Enterprise plans run across three tiers, priced per user per year in euros, with a minimum of 100 users on any subscription.
Standard tier is around €71 per user per year for 100 users, dropping to around €53 per user per year at 200 or more users. It includes the core Nextcloud Files platform, desktop and mobile clients, a one year maintenance lifecycle and email support with a two business day response time.
Premium tier is around €105 per user per year for 100 users, dropping to around €82 per user per year at 200 or more. It adds a five year or longer maintenance lifecycle, faster email response, optional phone support and clustered instance support, with Talk, Groupware and Office available as further add-ons.
Ultimate tier is around €205 per user per year for 100 users, dropping to around €184 per user per year at 200 or more. It adds the Nextcloud Assistant, Flow automation, Whiteboard, 24 hour phone and email support, and integrations with Microsoft Outlook, Exchange and Teams.
That 100 user minimum is the detail most Australian small and medium businesses miss. If you run a 15 person team, the Enterprise tiers as published simply are not built for you, because you cannot buy fewer than 100 licences. That gap between what individual self-hosting offers and what Nextcloud Enterprise pricing is designed for is exactly where managed hosting from a provider like Velocity Host sits, pricing per user with 5 users, instead of a minimum tier of 100 seats.
Nextcloud Hub Pricing: Is It a Separate Product?
This is a question we see often, and the short answer is that Nextcloud Hub is not a separate priced product. Hub is simply the name Nextcloud gives to its yearly release, bundling the Files platform together with Office, Talk, Groupware, Assistant and the rest of the collaboration suite into one coordinated version. There is no separate price list for Hub itself to look up. What you pay depends on which path you take from this guide: free if you self-host the Nextcloud Files platform yourself, the Enterprise tiers above if you want the company’s own support subscription, or a managed hosting price like ours if you want someone else to run it for you. The Hub branding describes the product, not a pricing plan.
Nextcloud Cost vs Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and ownCloud
Here is how Nextcloud cost actually lines up against the alternatives a small or medium business is likely to be weighing it against, on a per user per month basis.
| Option | Per user, per month | What it includes |
| Nextcloud self-hosted | Software free, infrastructure and time not | You run and maintain everything yourself |
| ownCloud Community | Free, unlimited users | Self-hosted, file sync and share only, no managed support |
| ownCloud Standard or Enterprise | Undisclosed, minimum 25 users, annual commitment | 9×5 or 12×5 support, published pricing not available |
| Velocity Host Managed Nextcloud | $24.96 per user (min 5 users) | Dedicated instance, full audit log, two-factor required, Australian hosting, no lock-in |
| Nextcloud Enterprise Standard (software only, excludes hosting) | Approximately €71 per year, or about $6.50 AUD per month | Support subscription only, minimum 100 users, you still pay for hosting on top |
| Google Workspace Plus | $30.90 | 5 TB, Vault, eDiscovery |
| Microsoft 365 Business Premium | $32.90 | Adds Intune, Entra ID P1, Defender |
All prices in AUD, excluding GST, captured 24 September 2026. The Nextcloud Enterprise Standard row is converted from euros at an approximate rate and excludes hosting entirely, so it is not a fair like-for-like line against the others without adding your own server cost on top. We have included it anyway because leaving it out would be the more misleading choice.
Which is better in 2026, Nextcloud or ownCloud?
ownCloud and Nextcloud share a history. Nextcloud was forked from ownCloud in 2016 by much of the original development team, and the two projects have since diverged. In 2026, Nextcloud has the larger active developer community, a faster release cycle, and a considerably broader app ecosystem covering talk and video, office editing, project boards, a wiki and workflow automation. ownCloud’s current architecture, Infinite Scale, is positioned more narrowly around fast, reliable file sync at scale, which is a real strength if file sync performance under heavy load is your main concern.
For cost specifically, ownCloud offers a genuinely free, unlimited-user Community edition for self-hosting, which matches what Nextcloud’s own open source release offers. Where the two diverge is published transparency: ownCloud’s paid Standard and Enterprise tiers require contacting sales for a quote, with a minimum of 25 users, so there is no public Nextcloud-style price list to compare against directly. For most Australian small and medium businesses wanting a full collaboration platform, not just file sync, rather than a quote-only enterprise product, Nextcloud’s broader feature set and transparent Enterprise pricing tiers make it the easier platform to budget for.
How Much Does 1TB of Cloud Storage Cost?
This question comes up constantly when people start pricing Nextcloud, so it is worth answering directly, with the caveat that consumer storage prices change often and should be checked against each provider’s current page before you rely on them.
As a rough order of magnitude, consumer cloud storage services price 2TB plans somewhere in the range of 10 to 15 dollars a month, with smaller tiers such as 100GB or 200GB priced lower. Those figures swing with regional pricing, promotional periods and bundled AI features, so treat them as a ballpark rather than a quote.
The comparison that matters more than the raw number is what you are buying. A consumer storage plan is exactly that: storage, with sync and sharing. It is not a dedicated instance, it does not include an audit log of who touched which file, and in most cases your data is not held exclusively in Australia. A storage-only comparison against a consumer product on cost per gigabyte alone will always make Nextcloud look expensive, because you are comparing a single feature against a full platform.
Managed Nextcloud Hosting Pricing: The Velocity Host Alternative
If Nextcloud Enterprise’s 100 user minimum does not fit your business, and self-hosting is more time than you want to spend, managed hosting is the third path. Velocity Host’s managed Nextcloud pricing is per 5 users per month, with no minimum of 100 seats and no annual commitment.
Base plan
$24.96 per user per month, excluding GST, with a minimum of 5 users. Every user gets 50 GB of replicated storage, document editing in Nextcloud Office, Nextcloud Talk for video and chat, calendars and contacts, project boards and a shared knowledge base, two-factor authentication enforced on every account, antivirus scanning on every upload, and a full audit log. Setup is included.
Worked cost examples
| Team size | Base plan, per month | Effective per user |
| 5 users | $124.80 | $24.96 |
| 10 users | $249.60 | $24.96 |
| 20 users | $499.20 | $24.96 |
All figures AUD per month, excluding GST.
Optional add-on packs
Document Governance, Full-Text Search, Digital Signing, Collaborative Whiteboard and VelocityMail are available as packs on top of the base plan, each priced per user except Full-Text Search, which is priced per server because it adds a dedicated search service rather than a per-seat feature. You can see full pack pricing and what each one does on our managed Nextcloud hosting page.
Second-site disaster recovery and anything outside the standard catalogue, including migrations, custom integrations and training, is available as consulting at $165 per hour ex GST.
All plans are month-to-month with no lock-in contract, and your data is stored only in Australia, on Australia’s first Tier 4 data centre, under Australian data privacy and sovereignty laws. For businesses weighing data residency as part of their decision, our managed Nextcloud hosting page covers data sovereignty and local support in full.
What Self-Hosting Actually Costs: The Hidden Nextcloud Cost
Self-hosting Nextcloud for free is a genuine option, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. But “free” needs an honest accounting of what it actually takes, because the hidden costs are where self-hosting quietly stops being cost effective for a business.
Infrastructure is the smaller part of the bill. A VPS sized for a small team, a domain, an SSL certificate and backup storage add up to a real but modest monthly cost.
Time is the larger part, and the part most businesses underestimate. Initial setup, including the web server, PHP, the database and a working SSL certificate, is a project in its own right. After that, ongoing maintenance never stops: security patches need applying promptly, because Nextcloud is a target precisely because it is popular, the server operating system needs its own separate patch cycle, backups need to actually be tested, not just scheduled, and when something breaks outside business hours, someone has to be available to fix it. None of that is included in the free software licence.
For a business owner or an in-house IT person, that time has an opportunity cost. Every hour spent patching a mail gateway or chasing a failed backup job is an hour not spent on the work that actually earns revenue. Self-hosting is cost effective when someone on staff already has the Linux skills and the spare capacity to do this work as part of their existing role. It becomes expensive, in the way that matters, the moment that work competes with everything else the business needs that person doing.
This is the gap managed Nextcloud hosting is built to close. You keep the open source platform, the data control and the absence of per-seat software licensing. You hand off the server administration, the patching and the 7pm phone call.

A distributed technology consultancy consolidated a stack of separate SaaS subscriptions, chat, video, project boards, file sync and a wiki, into a single managed Nextcloud bill. Read the distributed team case study.
A business running everything through remote desktop moved daily work to managed Nextcloud, retired Exchange, and shrank its Microsoft licensing to a single Windows-only accounting application on a much smaller remote desktop footprint, cutting RDS CALs, Office licensing on session hosts and Exchange licensing in the process. “We started using Velocity Host less than 6 months ago, on a recommendation of an ex-colleague, to implement a migration from a hard physical server to a cloud-based solution using Nextcloud. We had a few tricky circumstances that caused problems through the implementation stage, but Gerardo and the team were extremely responsive, enabling us to power through to the solution we desired, with next to no downtime for our employees.” Tim Shirley, CFO, WGS
Nextcloud Pricing FAQs
Can you self host Nextcloud for free?
Yes. The Nextcloud Server software is free and open source under the AGPLv3 licence, with no licence fee for any number of users. What is not free is the infrastructure it runs on and the time it takes to administer. You still need a server or VPS, a domain, an SSL certificate, backup storage, and ongoing maintenance time for updates and security patches. Self-hosting for free describes the software cost, not the total cost of running it.
How does Nextcloud make money?
Nextcloud GmbH, the German company behind the open source project, makes money by selling Nextcloud Enterprise subscriptions: paid support, extended maintenance lifecycles and additional enterprise features sold on top of the free software, at a minimum of 100 users per subscription. The company does not sell hosting directly to most customers, which is why a separate market of managed Nextcloud hosting providers, including Velocity Host, exists to serve businesses that want the platform run for them.
How much does 1TB of cloud storage cost?
Consumer cloud storage services typically price around 2TB somewhere in the 10 to 15 dollar a month range, though this varies by provider, region and promotional pricing, so it is worth checking current rates directly before budgeting against them. For Nextcloud specifically, there is no single per-terabyte price, because Nextcloud storage cost depends on where you choose to run it: your own hardware, a VPS you manage, or a managed hosting plan like ours, which bundles 50 GB per user into the base price with further storage available by quote.
Is Nextcloud 100% free?
Only the software. Nextcloud Server costs nothing to download and run under its open source licence. Running it as a business platform is not free once you account for server or VPS costs, a domain and SSL certificate, backup storage, and the ongoing time spent on security patches and maintenance. Whether that makes Nextcloud free in practice depends entirely on whether your own time is being counted as a cost.
Is Nextcloud free if self-hosted?
The software licence is free regardless of who hosts it. Self-hosting specifically means you are also providing and managing the server yourself, so the total cost is the infrastructure plus your own time, rather than a hosting fee paid to someone else. It is the cheapest way to run Nextcloud in direct dollar terms, and the most expensive in time, for anyone without existing Linux administration capacity on staff.
What are the limitations of using Nextcloud?
Nextcloud’s third-party integration ecosystem is smaller than Microsoft’s or Google’s. Very complex Office files, particularly macro-heavy spreadsheets, should be tested in Nextcloud Office before committing to a migration. Staff used to Outlook and Teams need a short adjustment period. On cost specifically, Nextcloud Enterprise pricing is built around a 100 user minimum, which locks most small and medium businesses out of the official support subscription and leaves self-hosting or managed hosting as the realistic paths. And someone, somewhere, has to run the server. That is the limitation managed hosting removes.
Which is better in 2026, Nextcloud or OwnCloud?
For most Australian small and medium businesses wanting a complete collaboration platform rather than file sync alone, Nextcloud is the stronger choice in 2026, on the strength of its larger developer community, broader app ecosystem and transparent Enterprise pricing tiers. ownCloud remains a credible option, particularly its free Community edition for straightforward self-hosted file sync, but its paid tiers require a sales conversation rather than a public price list, which makes it harder to budget against upfront.
