TrueNAS Cloud Hosting

for Australian Business

In brief

  • Run TrueNAS on cloud services.
  • Cloud hosted TrueNAS offers all the advantage with no dedicated self supplied hardware.
  • Velocity Host provides tailored solutions for businesses looking for cloud based TrueNAS solutions

TrueNAS has a reputation as something you run on a box under your desk, not something you host in the cloud. That reputation is out of date. Whether you need TrueNAS as managed cloud storage, or you are asking whether you can run TrueNAS on a VM for your own environment, the honest answer is yes to both, with some real technical caveats worth understanding before you commit to Truenas in the cloud.

Velocity Host hosts and manages TrueNAS for Australian businesses, with setup, tuning and support delivered in Australian time zones, not an overseas call centre reading from a script.

Why TrueNAS Cloud Hosting Works

...for Australian Businesses

The assumption that TrueNAS cannot be run in the cloud usually comes from a fair observation: TrueNAS was built as self-hosted NAS software, not as a cloud service you sign up for.

While this is true, it does not mean TrueNAS cannot be hosted. Put TrueNAS on the right hardware, with proper data centre, remote access and cloud sync built in, and it functions as private cloud storage for your business, all without handing your data to a third party’s multi-tenant platform:

  • TrueNAS supports S3-compatible object storage and cloud sync tasks to Amazon S3, Azure, Google Cloud, Backblaze and other targets natively;
  • With native replication between TrueNAS systems you have an off-site copy without a third-party backup product;
  • Remote access over NFS, SMB, iSCSI or a VPN means your team reaches it like any other cloud storage service;
  • Hosted in a proper data centre rather than a cupboard, it gains the power, cooling and network redundancy a business actually needs.

Most importantly for data privacy, Velocity Host hosts TrueNAS servers in Australia’s first Tier 4 data centre, keeping your data onshore under Australian data sovereignty laws rather than defaulting to an overseas cloud region.

TrueNAS Hosting on a Virtual Machine

What to Know Before You Do

Can you run TrueNAS on a VM? Yes, and it is a common deployment model, but ZFS, the file system underneath TrueNAS, wants direct access to real disks, not a virtualised storage layer. Get this wrong and you lose the data integrity guarantees that are the whole reason to run TrueNAS in the first place:

  • Pass through a whole HBA or storage controller to the VM, not individual virtual disks, so TrueNAS talks to the physical drives directly;
  • Connect that controller to a PCIe slot wired directly to the CPU, so it does not share an IOMMU group with other hardware the host needs;
  • Avoid putting a TrueNAS virtual disk on top of another file system or ZFS pool on the host. Stacking ZFS on ZFS, or ZFS on ext4, adds overhead and risk for no benefit;
  • Disable memory ballooning for the TrueNAS VM. Community reports describe VM crashes and failed restarts when the host reclaims memory mid-operation;
  • Understand that passed-through disks are not included in standard hypervisor backups or snapshots. Back up TrueNAS data using its own replication or snapshot tools, not the hypervisor’s.

This is where a managed approach earns its keep. Getting disk passthrough wrong is a common way self-managed TrueNAS-on-VM deployments go wrong, and it is exactly the kind of configuration Velocity Host gets right the first time.

TrueNAS Servers in Australia

Dedicated, Virtual or Managed

Where you host TrueNAS depends on your workload, and Australian businesses generally choose between three paths.

  • Dedicated TrueNAS hardware: physical TrueNAS Mini, R Series or larger hardware, either on your premises or hosted and remotely managed in a data centre. This gives ZFS direct access to real disks with no virtualisation layer to configure around, and is the option Velocity Host recommends for production storage workloads.
  • Virtual private servers: TrueNAS virtualised on a VPS with the controller passthrough approach described above, suited to smaller workloads, testing, or businesses that want to scale storage up and down with compute.
  • Managed hosting: Velocity Host configures, tunes and supports either option, with monitoring, patching and local Australian support included.

If you are searching for dedicated servers in Australia for a TrueNAS deployment, Velocity Host’s position is dedicated, reserved-resource hosting on our own Australian infrastructure, paired with TrueNAS expertise, rather than a bare metal marketplace listing.

TrueNAS Host Options

Choosing Between VPS and Dedicated Hardware

If you are also searching for virtual private servers in Australia to run TrueNAS on, Velocity Host’s VPS and VDS plans run on local ZFS-backed SSD storage, with full root access, DDoS protection, and dedicated resource allocation on every plan.

  • VPS and VDS plans scale from entry-level shared compute through to larger KVM instances with dozens of CPU cores and hundreds of gigabytes of RAM.
  • Every plan includes full root access, so you can install and configure TrueNAS as you need it.
  • Optional managed support covers patching, monitoring, backups and performance tuning, so the passthrough and configuration work described above is handled for you rather than left to trial and error.

Is Synology better than TrueNAS? It depends what you are optimising for, and the honest answer is that each is better at a different job.

Synology’s DSM software is polished and can be running in around ten minutes, with strong first-party apps for backup, file sync and photo management

  • Synology hardware compatibility is handled for you, since DSM only runs on Synology’s own devices, which keeps updates predictable;
  • TrueNAS runs on a far wider range of hardware, uses OpenZFS rather than Synology’s Btrfs or ext4, and gives you a choice of operating system base;
  • TrueNAS’s open source model means vulnerabilities are found and patched in public, rather than sitting undisclosed inside closed vendor firmware.

For a business that wants zero configuration and is happy inside one vendor’s ecosystem, Synology is a reasonable choice. For a business that wants OpenZFS data protection, hardware flexibility and a path to cloud or VM hosting without being locked to one vendor’s hardware, TrueNAS is the stronger foundation, provided it is configured properly, which is where Velocity Host’s local setup and support closes the gap.

TrueNAS in Action

A Real Australian Business Result

A long-standing Velocity Host client running production workloads on SmartOS, a ZFS-native hypervisor platform, needed a backup destination that could handle native ZFS replication rather than a generic file-based cloud backup product. That requires administrative access on both ends, which most public cloud backup services do not offer, and sharing root-level access on shared infrastructure was not acceptable.

  • Velocity Host built a dedicated, isolated hosted zone for the client with its own dataset and full administrative rights inside it.
  • The array is built to a minimum of raidz3, tolerating three simultaneous drive failures per group.
  • Replication runs on native zfs send and zfs receive, moving only changed blocks between snapshots over SSH.
  • The client sets their own snapshot retention and runs replication on demand or on a schedule.
  • Data stays onshore in our Tier 4 data centre under Australian data sovereignty, with local support.
