Why native ZFS replication matters!

For people and businesses who give a S#!T about their data!
As a #Truenas partner and #ZFS fanboy, I’ve noticed over the years there is nothing here in Oz that caters for native ZFS replication from source > target on public cloud.
Unless you personally deploy 2+ x ZFS servers allowing for proper ZFS replication.
Why native ZFS matters.
I’m only going to list the differences here vs 3rd party tools, not all the ZFS features:
Because native ZFS replication:
– Only sends the delta of changed data between snapshots meaning reduced IP traffic and bandwidth requirements.
– Doesn’t need to read all the data again like 3rd party tools i.e. rsync to work out what’s changed, this means less wear & tear on infrastructure and a faster time to completion.
– Allows you to keep all the point in time snapshots or customise what snapshot retention to keep on source and target as part of a bigger backup strategy.
– Will work better with your data in the event of a DR scenario if a fail over/ fail back is required.
– On both target and source means you can quickly clone a dataset or zvol snapshot in seconds for testing.
– On source and target allow for data scrubbing and verification making sure your data remains consistent – imagine your backups are no longer valid due to bit rot & flipping.
Native ZFS benefits.
– Improved hardware longevity due to reduced wear & tear – extended hardware life = reduced costs
– Easier to manage on both source and target when they are using the same file system – Improved efficiency = save time = save money
– Data transfer reduced as only delta changes in data are sent = reduced traffic = Save time = Save money
Why am i telling you all of this?
Because we are tired of waiting and decided to fix the issue ourselves.
We’ve fixed these issue by building our own native ZFS platform – It’s an Australian 1st (well as far as i know it’s a 1st unless someone advises otherwise)
The Offering.
– Direct to businesses model as a shared or dedicated zone.
– Resellers can white label as their own or use our co-branding to deliver the above shared or dedicated zone models.
– Stage 1 – Now available to public.
– Stage 2 – More POD’s deployed to other Data Centres to allow for multi site replication and DR fail-over.
– Stage 3 – well we need to save some interesting things for later date!
