Reel Box TrueNas

Challenge

Reelbox digitisation experts have preserved over 700,000 video tapes, over 3 Million feet of film and 5 Million photos to DVD, USB and Hard Drive.
With no central location to store customer data Reelbox was faced with the issue of data sprawl across many devices, this made backing up and keeping previous versions of projects hard to manage with many hours per week invested in data management.

Solution

A central storage solution was needed to bring data from all production projects together, TrueNas was selected for the project due to it’s flexibility and data management capabilities.

We where able to help Ron and the Reelbox team to create a work flow that pooled all of their working projects into 1 space, with TrueNas we could use multiple drives for redundancy in case of drive failure providing an additional layer of data protection.

Part of the new workflow included taking regular time based snapshots of the data in case a project was removed too early from storage or needed to be rolled back to a previous version of the project which can save many hours of digitising the footage again from scratch.

Reelbox’s TrueNas solution delivers the ability to expand growth into a larger unit or to augment data to the cloud when needed using the inbuilt cloud sync or replication services.

Because the solution is based on site Reelbox can save on cloud hosting fees which has saved thousands of dollars per year compared to a cloud first solution.

Growth options include:

• Additional TrueNas at another location for replication and DR
• Expand into larger TrueNas unit with existing drives lift & shift
• Hybrid storage option with archival data sent to cloud storage
